JAMHURI SCHOOL ASIAN FOUNDATION        

 

Jamhuri High School (better known as Duke of Gloucester School in the Colonial days), had its beginnings as a nursery school in 1904 on what was then White House Road (presently Haile Selassie Avenue) near the Nairobi Railway Station.  In 1928, 14th February, it was relocated and expanded to become the Government Indian Elementary School in Ngara area and catered for less than one hundred students.  Some of the students AMAR NATH MAINI, BAHADURALI SULEMAN VIRJEE, DWARAKA NATH, CHUNILAL BHAGWANDASS &  KASSIM ALI. In 1953, during colonial rule the school was renamed “DUKE OF GLOUCESTER SCHOOL”, this was in Honour The Duke who took a keen interest in promoting the school and who presided over the opening of the Swimming Pool in 1962,  A Hostel was also introduced in 1961 to accommodate sixty students.  Kenya attained independence in 1963, on 27th September 1968 the school was renamed JAMHURI HIGH SCHOOL.  Hon DR. J.G. KIANO then The Minister for Education presided over The renaming. JAMHURI is a Kiswahili word meaning Republic.  Presently the school has a student population of over 800 and a strong tutoring staff of over sixty qualified teachers.  Throughout the years the school has managed to sustain a High Calibre of academic standards and many students have benefited from this institution and further graduated in various successful fields as Lawyers, Doctors, Chemists, Judges and prominent Businessmen.

 

Among Jamhuri High School’s many eminent past students were two of Kenya’s distinguished legislators, the late Chief MADAN, and the former CHIEF JUSTICE MAJID COCKAR.

 

After independence, the grant which was normally given to Government schools, dried up and virtually all the secondary schools in Kenya re- starving for want of physical amenities, Educational Equipment (Text Books and additional reference materials, laboratory equipment, teaching materials and other facilities.  As a result of financial constraints.  Jamhuri High School not sustain the maintenance of such a big institution on its own.  This often been compounded by poor administration or support.  The impact of lack of funds resulted in fall of academic performance of the students.  Let it be remembered that Jamhuri High School was the premier school in the past which gradually declined in academic standards after independence in the 90’s it was usually at the bottom of the scale.

 

 

 

Setting up of the Foundation

To address this desperate situation prevailing in the Jamhuri High School, the Jamhuri High School Asian Foundation was formed Registration No. 17584 of 17th January 1997.  It is a non-profit making organisation.  The founder members were Shirin Esmail, MBS, late Jayant Jamnadas Ruparel, Mr. Rasik Kantaria and Shantilal P. Shah.  The objectives of the foundation are
